My condolences for your loss. I loved Charles and will miss him dearly. He was like a surrogate father to me when I was in university and the male figure I sought advice from in those difficult years after my dad died. I loved his sense of humour, his steadfast dependability, his kindness, gentleness and was very much in awe of his brilliance in crafting beautiful objects.

Dear Anne, our condolences at your father's passing. Peter, helping with research projects in his role in IT services, worked with Charles over many years at UNB, and then both of us interacted with him with the Christian Forum. Cheryl enjoyed many chats with him about databases. And now we find a MacDonald College connection as Cheryl's father was also an alumnus. We had planned to be at the funeral this morning but then could not. We pray the peace and comfort of God on you and your family at this time.

My deepest condolences to all of the families of Charles Thornton. I knew Charles from his time at Holy Trinity. He had a great sense of humour and even though he had a quiet demeanour, he always loved to chat and keep up. Thoughts and prayers to all. You will be missed. RIP Charles.

I first met Charles when he reviewed my research funding applications when I was professor at the University of New Brunswick. He then began attending a Bible study group consisting of professors from engineering and humanities. Charles was the only administration participant and I was the only forestry one. Participation in that group was the beginning of Charles’ personal experience with Christ. Later, he regularly participated in a weekly Bible study with several friends, myself included. He was a humble man who took some years to get to the point where he felt in the right place to participate in Holy Communion. I respected for how serious he was about that.
He was very helpful to his mother who lived in Victoria BC, visiting her often and helping her with moves and with living in an assisted living home. I admired how diligently he looked after her, even though she was so far away.
I liked Charles’s unique sense of humour. He often signed his emails “staff”. Of course, there was no staff other than Charles himself, but his perspective on this was amusing.
He was always pleasant, often funny and always ready to help. His faith in Jesus helped him through several difficult occasions in his life, the latest of which was a battle with life-threatening cancer. Even when very ill, he remained cheerful, positive, uncomplaining and strong in faith. My life, and the lives of many others, were enriched in having had relationships with him.

I met Charles in 1956 in high school. We became good friends then and through our undergraduate years at Sir George Williams University. I don't recall backyard rocket launches and I'm sorry I missed them. However, I do remember him building Heathkit radios and other electronic devices. He also had a penchant for disassembling things and putting them back together, usually. We ran with a bunch of friends from high school who also went to SGWU. In those days he was Charlie and often, just Chas. We remember fondly, or not, his enthusiasm for punning and have wonderful memories of end-of-term gatherings at Orford lake. He was my best man when I married my wife, Kate, in Scotland in 1968. He visited us on Vancouver Island a few years ago and gave us a fine bottle of wine which he suggested we put down for a special occasion. We saved it for our 50th wedding anniversary. Kate and I offer our condolences to his family and friends.

Our deepest condolences to the family. I did not know Charles well, but had heard much of him, all good. If there is one contribute that man can have, it is, "He was a good man". Charles was good to his family, friends, and church. Our memories of him will endure in the years ahead.

Charles was my son's (Anthony) father in law and the grandfather to my two beautiful grandsons, Luke and Gabriel. Although I did not know him well, I can say that he was a wonderful father and grandfather, having raised two daughters with beautiful, kind and loving hearts. He has been like a second father to my son throughout these many years and I am grateful for his many kindnesses and the loving example he set for my son and grandsons. My heart and prayers are very much with the family at this time of great loss. The greatest legacy anyone can leave is to impact the lives of others around them in a positive way. Charles did this in spades. Whenever you add value to other people's lives, you are leaving your footprints in the sands of time that live on. Thank you Charles.
