I was a close neighbor of Lee's on Queen Street in Chatham. He was a year older. We grew up together and were in Scouts together. He was a great friend. I began to suffer from chronic depression about 25 years ago - so I pretty much withdrew from society. I just learned today (March 4/23) of Lee's death. He was the one who encouraged me to go to university. He helped me get settled and looked after my furnishings. Not a good friend - a GREAT FRIEND. I just wish I could have been the same to him!
With love & many thanks,
Reg Curtis

I grew up with Lee on Queen St. in Chatham & we played together, traded comic books, went to the same school. One thing that I remember is the Hallowe'en party we went to when we were about 13 & 14 years of age, Lee dressed as a woman & I was dressed as a man. We had many laughs & fun together. I have not seen or been in touch with Lee for many years, certainly my loss. I loved reading all the memories posted & what a fine friend he was to everyone. My thoughts & prayers to Anne, Herbert & his many friends.

I first met Lee in 1962 when as patients at the Moncton City Hospital we shared a room. It was about 5 years ago that I came across his name on Facebook because we shared a mutual friend. I contacted him and we reknewed that friendship started so long ago. The two of us met for a coffee in Fredericton shortly after.
Lee impressed me in 1962 with his sharp mind and sense of humour. Nothing had changed.
To his family and friends, I offer my sincerest condolences.

I’m deeply saddened for everyone’s loss of Lee. His sense of humour was off the charts and often his digs at me gave me chest pains from laughing. I’m sure now that his wish for hospitals to have a smoking room for patients and have Dixie Lee on the menu will never come to be. RIP old friend.

My condolences to Lee's family and friends. I worked with Lee when he first joined Social Services and when his feline companions were Mork and Mindy. I have many stories from those days. He was a unique individual with his wit and comments such that you always had to keep your guard up! My kids referred to him as the guy who made the boozy fruitcake which he shared ... thank goodness. Lee was a generous soul despite his sometime gruff manner.
I am unable to make the service tomorrow but will celebrate him in my own way ... perhaps with a glass of red. RIP Lee.

I came to know Lee through our work together at Human Resource and Development and then to become Social Development. Lee had a keen wit and was able to convince many that he was the second in command. In many ways he commanded a presence throughout the department. If you wanted a policy decision, he knew the answer, almost as if he wrote it himself. He had a few close friends at work and spent much time cultivating those relationships. He was able to needle others and he always was disarming with his silly little grin. Lee used to be well read and would often photocopy articles that he knew I would be interested in and leave them on my desk. In our later years, we both learned of each other’s health struggles. He often encouraged me especially when I was in hospital as I knew that he too was in his own battle. He loved Grand Manan and I can picture him there reading a favourite book. Rest well Lee.

I was saddened to hear of Lee’s passing and extend my sincere condolences to his family, extended family and friends. I first met Lee when I lived in Fredericton in the ‘70s. I would visit him often during my visits to Fredericton, the last one three years ago. We stayed in touch through our mutual interest and love of organ music. I will miss his regular messages and attachments of organs and organ music.Whoever wrote the Obituary did a credible job describing Lee as he lived and as how I remember him - he was one of a kind and lived a live worth celebrating. Rest in peace my friend! Tom Fagan

Lee made a strange city and a new province feel like home. From the day Oliver first brought me to meet him, he acted like he had known me all his life. I will miss his cheeky grin. May he rest in peace.

My condolences to Lee's friends & family.
My family moved to University Ave across the street from Lee when I was 14 and I have a lot of fond memories of being his neighbour - holiday parties, front porch visits and Lee's heckling from his balcony on our walks to the market. One time when I was around 17 I remember my parents were out of town and I had to tie a tie for a funeral which I couldn't figure out. After several failed attempts over the phone with my dad he recommended I go over to Lee's house for emergency aid ... and Lee of course pulled through (although it came at the cost of him giving me a hard time about it for years following). RIP Lee.

My condolences go out to Anne, Herbert and Lee’s many friends. Lee was a childhood friend on Queen St., in Chatham. Many happy hours were spent playing in the “jungle”. We lost touch for many years but reconnected through f.b. He dropped in to visit shortly after I relocated in Miramichi area when he was passing by with his job.It is a memory I cherish. Rest well, dear friend.

Condolences to Lees family. This is what he meant to me.
The first time I recall meeting Lee was around 16 years ago at a big birthday party at the Gorman Asal’s. I’d been hired as the bar tender and was serving up Cosmos and Lemon Drops. I served Lee many times at the bar that night, probably more than anyone else, and I might not have given him the best first impression. Stunned as I was at the ability to pack the drinks away, I asked him whether he really “needed” another. As it turned out, he did, and I knew not to ask that question again.
Throughout university, time spent at Lee’s was cherished. There was always a rum & coke or a G&T or a glass of red… Despite Lee almost never drinking any beer, he kept it in stock for the times when the boys would come over (no mean feat to keep a bar stocked for these boys).
The boys would come over for a game of crib, some of Lee’s homemade snacks, to watch a game, or just to meet up. We came back for conversation and the company. Lee was known to enjoy getting a rise out of people and needless to say he was pretty good at it. You could talk news or politics or literature or philosophy… but you’d best stick to what you knew around Lee, for what colourful language he had in store if you didn’t!
Over the years, I saw less of Lee. Far less than I’d have liked. The glory days of university were followed by busier times and distance followed by babies and pandemics. While I saw him less, he was no less in my thoughts. He was one of a handful of people I’ve know in my life that were like him. Not many people take the time and interest in young people that he took in us. His gift to us was the creation of a place that stands out in memory as one of community - chief bachelor! With decades between us, he became one of us.
So, here’s to Lee, one of those rare few who brings people together and creates a community. A man as generous as they come. Learned and unfiltered. He was a friend I won’t forget.

My heart goes out to Lee's family during this hard time. I worked with Lee for many years and while he was always playful he had also a big heart. I remember when I first worked with him I was one of the youngest on our team with two young children. We went out on strike. Lee was designated to work during the strike and one day Lee came out to see me on the picket line. He quietly passed me an envelope with cash from his own pay cheque to help my family out. He never wanted any thanks and I never forgot his kindness. May he rest in peace.
