Obituary of Penelope Jane Marshall
Penelope (Penny) Jane Marshall, daughter of Harold and Mary Marshall, sister to Tom (deceased), Bill (Susan), and Sally, and aunt to several nieces and nephews, died peacefully on February 11, 2023 at Frederick Hall, Shannex, in Fredericton.
She was born December 30, 1947 in Arvida, Quebec, but she liked to point out that she was conceived in New Brunswick. She grew up in Fredericton graduating with a BA from UNB in 1969 followed with a BLS from U of T in 1970.
An avid lover of books, she worked in various libraries from St. John’s to Regina. Notable achievements include being President of the Canadian Library Association, managing the University College of Cape Breton Press, and being the first woman president of a Kiwanis Club in Western Canada.
Loving travel, her highlight trip was to Botswana, Africa in 1974 to visit her parents. The trip home was six months by truck with 18 others camping across Africa from Johannesburg to London. She would later write a two hundred page travel log of this formidable experience after her retirement in 2001.
She appreciated visual art, fine made jewellery, and textiles, and excelled at various types of needlework. She read incessantly of cultures and histories right up until the last days of her life. She will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations to your local public library or the Multiple Sclerosis Society are appreciated. At Penny’s request, there will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held at McAdam’s Funeral Home in Fredericton on February 18th at 1:00 pm. A recoding of the service is available at the following link https://vimeo.com/event/2877537.
