To Doreen's Family;
When I first met Doreen, I was a young 20 year old who had just become acquainted with the United Church Women (UCW). I was a member on the Keswick Ridge Charge, and she was involved at the Presbyterial level at that time. I remember thinking how dedicated, knowledgeable, and poised she was in her role in UCW. Over the years I saw her at almost every UCW function I ever attended and then when my husband became involved with the Presbytery, he mentioned her involvement as Secretary and how she seemed "to be able to answer any question, handle any one of the Ministers", if she was given a hard time. She was undoubtedly an extraordinary person and found time for so many causes. Who could ever keep up to her. Now, as Co-President of Maritime UCW, I am offering our condolences to you, her family, at her passing and may you feel most fortunate that she was a mentor for all of us, not just those who knew her well. Blessing, Marilyn Bubar,, on behalf of Maritime UCW.

Dear Barb
Please know that the G'Ma Circle of Charlottetown/PEI is thinking of you as you bid goodbye to your dear mother. Sincere sympathy to you and your family at this time. From your descriptions of her, it's clear that she was as loving and loved as any mother could hope to be, so your memories will be very, very beautiful. Take care.

Dear Barb and Maureen, I was deeply saddened to read your mother’s obituary. Your mother was a great friend to my mother for the years that mom lived in Fredericton and the two of you were so kind to not only your mother, but to mine as well. I first got to know Doreen when I was a young 30 year-old involved with Project Ploughshares. Our lives intertwined on several occasions after that, and particularly during the time that our mothers were friends. Your mom was a special person. Her love for her church, the university, her community and, especially for the two of you and Shuanglian, was evident in so many ways. She was very proud of the three of you. Doreen was such a good friend to so many international students and their families. They benefited greatly from her friendship and support. Doreen was a good person who lived her life well. Gisele joins me in extending our deepest sympathies. We will miss Doreen.

Barb and Maureen: So very sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. Always welcoming, patient and generous, I looked to Doreen as a second mother. Along with your dad Norm, she was a great friend to my parents Marguerite and Jack, and brave to take me on for extended periods during our childhood. I will always remember her warm smile, her strength of character and dedication to important causes in helping women and foreign students. I send my love.

Dear Maureen, we were saddened when we learned from Kathy that your mother had died. When Kathy passed on the news, I caught myself thinking: with all of Doreen’s community involvements, I don’t know how she found the time to die. I don’t have to tell you that your mom was a very special person. She was someone who, when she recognized a need, she would mobilize whatever resources were needed to try and address the inequity.
i’m not telling you anything when I say, I appreciated your Mom for her ability to engage a concern. She was not shy!!!
I can only imagine the challenges she tackled as she tried to bring light to bare on injustice. She was an advocate for so many both within ...the community and also.within the church. She raised concerns about women’s issues, support of refugees, racism and more.
As you grieve her loss, may you be comforted by the number of lives she touched and made a difference. I’m sure her engagement in many of these issues also took her away from you and your family. As you grieve your loss, may you be comforted by stories shared by others where Doreen made a difference in their lives.
Grace and peace,
Bob and Donna Campbell.

Doreen had many causes to which she gave unstintingly, but she also could take time to play bridge. I was co-convenor of the Faculty Women's Bridge Group when we had to stop playing in one another's homes at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. We never regrouped, but Doreen was always open to picking up where we left off. She was an example to all of us in aging with her intelligence, spirit, and good humour intact.
My deepest sympathy to Doreen's family and close friends,
Jayne Nicki

Doreen’s generosity knew no borders. She played a key role in reuniting so many families, including mine. Beyond that, she opened her family up to me while I was away from mine. Over the years, Doreen become not only a dear friend, but a mother figure to me. My family and I would like to extend our condolences to Barbara, Maureen and Shuanglian; we share your loss and are eternally grateful to have known such a force. Doreen will be forever present in our minds and hearts.

I used to see a lot of Doreen when we were both involved with Woolastook Presbytery and Presbytery UCW. I admired her tremendously. She was so knowledgeable and capable in all the roles that she played. Her life was a gift to the United Church and to the community of new Canadians in our midst.

My condolences and prayers are with Doreen's family. She was a powerhouse of a person when it came to the causes she was involved with. I am glad for the many things she opened my eyes to during our time together on presbytery and interchurch refugee committee. She will leave a big void. May God be with you during this time.

I was very sad to see that Doreen has passed away. She has always been my link to my mother, Karen Whitney. They worked together on church committees and I first met Doreen at our house visiting my mom. Years later I had the good fortune of working with Doreen on Presbytery - she taught me so many things. My condolences to her family.

To the family of Doreen Kissick
Sorry to learn of the passing of a good friend and neighbour. Doreen was always a welcoming hostess at her Burden Street home. She served well on so many charitable causes. After Norm’s early death she carried on very capably. She was a special friend of my cousin Fran Campbell. She certainly was role model to all those who are left behind. She will be missed.

We are extremely saddened to hear of Doreen’s passing. It was through her selfless work in the Interchurch Refugee Committee that our family was able to immigrate to Canada after the Bosnian war and start a new life. We are eternally grateful and will cherish the memory of her always. Our condolences to Barb, Maureen and Shuanglian.
