Obituary of Florence Evelyn Hawkins

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Florence Evelyn (Currie) Hawkins on April 19th, 2023, at York Care Centre. Born on March 18th, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Frederick Hollister and Cecilia Florence (Cordery) Currie, and the beloved spouse, of 64 years, Joseph “Max” Hawkins.

Florence loved to knit, sew, paint and cook. She was a member of the Canadian Kennel Club, raising, training and loving her labrador retrievers for years. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. There were many trips back and forth to visit over the years, along with many summers caring for her grandchildren at the family cottage at Grand Lake.

She began her career at the University of New Brunswick where she was a secretary after she graduated from Fredericton High School. She decided to make a career change and graduated with a Bachelor of Education in 1976, and spent her teaching career at Oromocto High School retiring in 1995. She had also returned to university, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, double honours, in history and English in 1985.

She will be greatly missed by her husband, Max Hawkins; daughters, Deanna Hawkins-Scott (Dave Scott), and Susan Ross (Paul); grandchildren, Joseph Scott (Kayla), Elizabeth Price (Kyle), Rebecca Scott, Rachel MacLean (Tom), Christy Roberts (Tim), Benjamin Ross (Julie) and Victoria Ross (Philippe Lavoie); great grandchildren, Noah, Theodore, Max, Henry, Owen and Ethan, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Florence was predeceased by her sisters, Inez Moore and Margaret Flynn, as well as brothers, John, Gerald and Douglas Currie.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Birch Grove, York Care Centre for their very kind, gentle care, and compassion.

A visitation will take place on Sunday, April 23rd, 2023 at McAdam’s Funeral Home from 2 – 5 pm. A memorial service will be held at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Main St. on Monday, April 24th, 2023 at 11 am, with Ven. Paul Ranson officiating. Interment will take place at Seymour Memorial Cemetery at a later date. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the York Care Foundation, St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, or Seymour Memorial Cemetery.
