Obituary of Joe Glenn

In Loving Memory: Ralph Orwood Glenn (November 28, 1947 - June 11, 2023)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ralph “Joe” Orwood Glenn, beloved husband, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend. Joe passed away peacefully at his home in Southampton, New Brunswick on Sunday, June 11th, at the age of 75 after a valiant battle, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, love, generosity, good humour and countless cherished memories.

Born on November 28th, 1947, in the town of Crystal City, Manitoba, Joe was the son of Ralph and Laura Glenn. He grew up in a close-knit family alongside his two siblings, David and Susan, where they resided in Brandon, Manitoba until Joe was 5 followed by a move to Pilot Mound, Manitoba.

After graduating from Pilot Mound High School, Joe worked at Investors Syndicate in the IT department in Winnipeg and then decided it was time to go to university. Joe completed his Bachelor of Physical Education degree and successfully obtained a Master’s Degree in Physical Education with certification in Athletic Therapy at the University of Manitoba. His expertise led him to the role of an educator, where he taught courses in Anatomy & Physiology and Kinesiology. He was also an athletic therapist for the Manitoba Bison Men’s Football, Basketball and Volleyball teams. Joe dedicated his time to many clinics and training camps. Another of Joe’s accolades was working as a trainer for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the CFL.

Joe left Manitoba to take on a new job at the University of New Brunswick teaching Anatomy, as well as Care and Prevention of Injuries in the Kinesiology Department. Joe's career as a professor spanned over 25 years. He was a well-known educator in the field and mentored many throughout his career. Joe's impact extended far beyond the university, as he touched so many with his kindness, patience, and willingness to help others.

During his tenure at UNB, Joe held the prominent role of athletic therapist for all athletic sports teams; however, he eventually shifted his focus and dedicated his time solely to the Men’s Varsity Hockey program. Joe's dedication was unwavering. His expertise in training, athletic therapy and his genuine care for the players made him a trusted figure among the team members. Beyond his professional skills, he had a genuine passion for the game of hockey and a deep understanding of the physical and mental demands it placed on the athletes. He worked tirelessly to ensure the players' well-being, both on and off the ice, providing them with top-notch medical care, rehabilitation, and support. Winning 8 Usports National Hockey Championships was a testament to his exceptional skills and the positive impact he had on the team's performance. Joe was a legend. The players respected and admired him, viewing him not only as their therapist but also as a mentor, confidant, and friend. His commitment, expertise, and steadfast support made him an integral part of their journey, and his impact on their lives and the success of the team will be remembered for years to come.

In addition to this, Joe travelled to Italy in 2007 and 2013. He was the equipment manager for the AUS All Star Men’s Hockey team that represented Canada at the World University Games.

During his time in New Brunswick, Joe met his wife, Peggy Allen. They were married August 13th, 1997, and eventually purchased a house along the St. John River where they enjoyed living surrounded by nature and their numerous dogs.

Joe made frequent visits to his family and friends in Pilot Mound, Manitoba. His nieces and nephews held a special place in his heart. He instilled in them the importance of embracing an active lifestyle and imparted the wisdom of infusing enjoyment into every aspect of life. Their shared laughter, joyful moments, and Joe’s valuable guidance created lasting memories that will be cherished for years to come.

In his spare time, Joe enjoyed cycling, downhill skiing, windsurfing, hockey, and walking the dogs. He was an avid reader and enjoyed sudokus, solitaire and cribbage.

Joe will be remembered for his gentle spirit, laid back nature, and his laugh. He was a pillar of strength and a source of inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Joe’s legacy lives on in the hearts of his loved ones and in the countless lives he touched throughout his journey.

Joe will be lovingly remembered by his wife Peggy; his brother David (Yvette) and sister Susan (Nick); in-laws Christina and Deon; sister-in-laws Sandra and Dione (Andre); nieces and nephews, Laurie (Jeff), Kern, Shea (Amanda), Patrick (Kira), Jeff (Danielle), Daniel, Tamara, Madison, Soleil, and Maxwell; great nieces and nephews Beau, Morgan, Emma, Hunter, Maddie, Kathryn, Reese, Sidney, Alia, and Will.

Joe is predeceased by his father and mother Ralph and Laura Glenn and brother-in-law Grant Martindale.

A celebration of Joe's life will be held on Sunday, June 18th, 2023 from 1:00 - 4:00pm, at the J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel in Fredericton, New Brunswick. This event will be livestreamed at https://vimeo.com/event/3495679.
