Dear Dorothy (though always Dr. McDade to me!), We were so very very sorry to hear of John's passing. He was such a wonderful man, filled with integrity, compassion, generosity and humour. We will never forget wandering into my fathers, after a day of work, only to hear John's booming laughter and to be greeted with such warmth and love. Generally we also got a blow by blow of their brilliance at the bridge table! The world is not as bright today, but we hope that you find solace and joy in the kazillion memories that you have of time shared in adventure and love.

Just learned of John's passing. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. John was a force of nature and a great friend. Dear Dorothy, I was sorry to read about John's passing in the UNB news today. John was one of my dad's (Charles Shannon) co-workers at City Hall in the 70s and 80s. John always sponsored me for my swim-a-thons and more than anyone else. That generosity of support left a major impression on me as a young person - that another adult who wasn't in my family cared enough about others to support them in what they did. From the age of 9, I knew him as a generous man and he always seemed to be smiling and happy. Now, as a faculty member at UNB, his generosity is something I'm aware of on a much larger scale. His impact was great. I am hoping that the thousands of memories that you have with him are a comfort in time even though your heart must be hurting now.

Dear Dorothy, We were so very saddened to learn of John's recent passing. He was one of a kind and a giant in the Fredericton community. Our City has lost one of its most passionate supporters and will be all the lesser for it. John's enthusiasm and commitment for a variety of causes was there for all to see. I feel honoured that I witnessed his passion in person during my time on the YMCA Board, the Fredericton Community Foundation and the UNB Beaverbrook Scholar Awards Committee. It was so wonderful to work with someone like John -- he energized everyone around him and I will never forget our time together. We are sure that you are devastated with losing your most special person in the world. We always loved seeing you and John out and about at every manner of event in the City. Again, the region will never be the same without your "dynamic duo". Wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the tough days ahead, and loving memories of John to forever hold in your heart. With much love, Jamie and Gisele Petrie
