Obituary of J. Peter Coombes
It is with sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our father, J. Peter Coombes, 87 years of age, on September 13th, 2023. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, he was the eldest son of the late Alleyne and Kirby Coombes formerly of Fredericton, New Brunswick. He is survived by his sister, Cathy, Gagetown, New Brunswick; brother, Arthur (Janice), Wellington, Ontario; daughter, Alleyne (Bill), Bedford, N.S.; sons, Chris, Pointe Claire, and Michael (Heather), Lachine, as well as his grandchildren, Samantha, William, Emmerson, and Payton. He was predeceased by his son, Andy.
He graduated from UNB in 1959 with a degree in Engineering and upon graduation began work at City Hall in Pointe Claire, Quebec. He was the youngest person selected to become their City Engineer. In 1977, Peter began working for Lavalin International initially working in Ottawa and then in Lagos, Nigeria and finally in Nairobi, Kenya. He settled in Nairobi for over thirty years with visits home to Montreal and the Maritimes. He finally moved home to Canada in 2018.
Our father was a long-time golf enthusiast. He was a member of the Beaconsfield Golf Course, in Quebec and when in Africa, the Muthaiga Golf Club. During the 80’s he also became a member of the R&A (Royal and Ancient) and as such, was able to play many of Britain’s finest link courses. He was only too happy to spend his holidays playing golf.
Cremation has taken place, and a graveside service will be held in the Fredericton Rural Extension Cemetery on Friday, September 22nd at 2p.m
