Obituary of Velma Clare Jones

The death of Velma Clare Jones occurred at the Oromocto Public Hospital on October 11, 2023. Velma, of Barrie’s Special Care Home, was formerly of Charters Settlement, NB. She was the widow of the late Kenneth H. Jones (d. 1998).

Velma was born on April 23, 1937 on Long Wharf Street in Saint John to John Francis and Mary Theresa (Kennedy) Young. She shared many memories of growing up there prior to the construction of the Harbour Bridge.

Ken and Velma were married on October 29, 1954 in Fredericton and relocated to Toronto where

he was employed by the TTC and she with the Hudson Bay Company. They returned to New Brunswick upon their retirements.

A very active member of Nasonworth Baptist Church, Velma served in the Sunday School and Awana Programs, the WMS, and the choir.

Velma is survived by two sons, Douglas (Janet) of Innisfil, ON, and Bill of Toronto; grandchildren, Stephen (Erin), and April (Matt); great-grandchild Aria Jones; a brother, David Young of Kawartha Lakes, and a sister, Jeanette of Oshawa.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a grandson, Matthew Jones (2001) and 5 brothers: John, Danny, Cecil, Richard and Kenny.

The family wishes to thanks the staff of Barrie’s Special Care Home and Mrs. Betty Nicholson for their care of Velma for the past few years.

Arrangements have been entrusted to McAdam’s Funeral Home. A visitation will be held at the Nasonworth Baptist Church on Friday, October 20, 2023, from 12:30-2pm, with service at 2pm. Interment will take place in the adjoining cemetery immediately after the service, with a reception to follow in the church basement. For those who wish, donations to the Nasonworth Baptist Church or the Fredericton SPCA would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences are gratefully accepted at www.mcadamsfh.com.
