Obituary of Mavis McLaughlin

The death of Josephine Mavis (Smith) McLaughlin of Fredericton, NB, wife of the late Marshal McLaughlin (1998) occurred on November 26, 2023, at The Dr Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital Emergency Room. Born on November 15, 1935, in Rusagonis, NB; she was the daughter of the late George and Catherine (Haines) Smith.  

Following their mother's death in 1944 Mavis and her sister resided with their great aunt and uncle, Hazel and Ern Nason, on St. John Street, attending school in Fredericton, going home by train every weekend and school holidays. Mavis graduated from the Atlantic Business College followed by a ten year career at Tractors & Equipment in Fredericton, NB. She was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, an active member of P.Y.P.S. and a Girl Guide Leader.  

Sharing the love of the great outdoors with her husband; they enjoyed gardening, boating, canoeing, picking cranberries, as well as snow shoeing and having lunch out in the woods together. She also had a love for knitting, sewing and baking.  

Mavis is survived by her daughter, Catherine "Cathy" McLaughlin of Fredericton, NB and her sister Yvonne Milward (Bert) of Fredericton, NB.

A Memorial Service will be held at J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel, 160 York Street, Fredericton, NB on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at 11 a.m.  A private interment will take place in the Gladstone Cemetery, Fredericton Junction, NB, at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Palliative Care at D.E.C.H., Lily’s Place Animal Sanctuary,  The Oromocto SPCA, or a charity of your choice.
