Obituary of John Reginald Shanahan

It is with great sadness that the family of Reg Shanahan announce his passing on November 29, 2023. Born and raised in Nelson, Miramichi, he was the son of the late James Douglas and Lillian (nee Fitzpatrick) Shanahan.

Educated in commerce, Reg pursued a profession in accounting, studying via correspondence from Queens University, which ultimately led him to owning and operating Killeens Transfer Ltd, Fredericton.

It was in Fredericton where he met and married his beloved wife of 53 years, Bertha (Murphy) and where he established life long roots.

In addition to Bertha, he is survived by their 2 sons, Shawn (Nicky) and Chris, as well as the proud grandfather of Mila, William, and Marc. He is also survived by siblings, Joyce Harriman of Peterborough ON, and Ralph Shanahan of Miramichi, in addition to many nieces and nephews.

Reg was predeceased by brothers, Douglas and Blair, as well as sisters, Shirley More and Pauline Creaghan.

As a local businessman, Reg took great pride in hiring people, often giving them their first job. Active in the community, Reg was a charter member of the Fredericton Garrison Club, as well as long time member of both the Fredericton Golf Club and Curling Club.

Reg had a passion for travel, enjoying many adventures with friends and family, taking him to the Caribbean, Europe, South America and Asia.

Throughout his life he cherished spending time at his summer home overlooking the Saint John River. In later years, Reg enjoyed talking politics and the news of the day, particularly with his friends over coffee at the Garrison Club and Regent Mall.

A true gentleman and one of a kind, he will be sorely missed.

McAdam's Funeral Home has been entrusted with Reg's final arrangements. There will be no services at this time. A burial in the Hermitage Catholic Cemetery will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations in Reg's name be made to the Fredericton Food Bank or a charity of your choosing.
