Obituary of Donald Andrew Barnes
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dad, Donald Andrew Barnes, originally of Pointe Claire, Quebec and later years Toronto and Kingston, Ontario. These last nine years he and his wife Marjorie were living in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Don was born in Montreal on March 6, 1932 and was the son of the late Charles and Magdalain (MacIntyre) Barnes.
Don passed away at the age of 91 on Thursday, December 14, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He leaves behind his wife Marjorie of 69 years and his two daughters, Lynn (Dale) Simpson and Jill (Michel) Ravenda. Some of his greatest joys were found in his grandchildren Jeffrey (Ceri), Kristina (Jonathan), Corey (Sarah) and Lisa (JJ). He was so proud of them all. He was also blessed by his great granddaughters, Tori, Addison and Amber Laagland as well as future great grand children he would welcome with open arms. Don was always interested in his nieces and nephews and their many accomplishments. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brother, John “Charles” Barnes.
He was a man who lived life to the fullest, always willing to lend a hand with a smile on his face and warmth in his heart. He was a faithful member of the United Church in Valois, Quebec, where he and Marge were married and raised their family. They continued to serve in other United Churches in Ontario. Don served as President of the Montreal Rotary Club. He was involved in the Council of International Investigators and Big Brothers / Big Sisters. He took an interest in photography for a number of years followed by stained glass making many items that are lasting memories.
Don began his career working in printing for the Montreal Star. He later, along with his brother John, joined the family business that his father started. They were given the opportunity to successfully manage Barnes Security Services Ltd. in Montreal and across Canada. Fortunate to retire early, Don loved the game of golf and was blessed to play often at home and in Florida where he and Marge spent many winters. He played his very last game three years ago with his sons in law and grandsons. Don made many friends over the years. He treasured people and relationships. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, but always, and until the end, he would say "he lived his life his way".
A memorial service will be held at the Morning Gate Church on Monday, December 18, 2023 at 11 am, with Pastor Brent Clark officiating. Interment will take place at a later date. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mcadamsfh.com
Rest in peace. Well done, good and faithful servant.
