My dear Jane Carla Rasmussen gave me the sad news about Jim. I am so sorry. Jim taught me philosophy in my first year. He made learning and exploring new ideas a great adventure. He was a kind, thoughtful and gentle soul. And this world is a far better place for his having been here. May the words of this Hopi prayer bring you a measure of comfort: Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousands winds that blow. I am the diamonds' glint on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the autumn's gentle rain. When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there. I did not die. You and Jim are in my thoughts. Mark

Jane, How fortunate that I met you at the store this week, or I might never have heard of Jim's passing for who knows how long. Both you and he come to my mind when I am reminded of STU days, both in separate contexts, both sweeping me with fond and warm memories of the broad and welcoming smiles that you shared with everyone, and with the positive spirit that we are so much in need of today and going forward. My thoughts are with you and your kids today. You (and I) are both so lucky to have friends and family who step up in such times. I read the condolences sent to you. Peace and love abound. You are strong, I sense that. All the best to you in the coming days, weeks and months, my friend. Pat

My condolences to your family. The times at Camp Asher around the fire pit are some of the best with your family and especially Jim. I was and will be forever impressed and grateful at how Jim would engage everyone around the fire in a meaningful conversation about shared interests or curiosities, which would always end with a problem solved and with a laugh. His joie de vivre and elegant manner of speaking resonated with me and is a character quality to which I continually aspire in my own life. With Sympathy, Stephen

Dear Jane and Family: Mary and I were so sorry to hear today of Jim's death from Mary's sister, Anne Doyle. While Jim and I were not very close over the years, he and I always enjoyed having a chat every so often and getting up to date on each other's lives. Jim and I were classmates at STU through the mid-60's and I recall fondly the guitar sessions in his next-door-to-me STU Residence room with Charlie Bourgeois singing the 60's folksongs. We were aware of Jim's illness and have been thinking of him over the past months. May he rest in peace. Mary and Tom McIllwraith
