Obituary of Gerene Allyson Gaines

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Gerene Allyson (Greene) Gaines on January 11, 2024, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Born on January 10, 1947 in Florenceville, NB, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Marion (Smith) Greene.

Gerene attended Florenceville High School and Woodstock Vocational School. This was followed by a year at Olten’s Business College. After a year working at McCain Foods in Florenceville, She married Leonard and they relocated to Deep River Ontario where he worked at Chalk River Nuclear Research Laboratories. Both of her sons were born there and after 5 years they returned to Fredericton.

Gerene loved to travel, when her sons were young it was camping in a tent trailer mostly roaming about the Maritimes and New England. Later in life she was fortunate to visit Europe, Western Canada and trips to Florida with her grandchildren. The one place she loved most was Bar Harbor, Maine, and summer wasn’t here until she got there at least once.

As many people are aware Gerene had many medical challenges during her last 20 years, but she amazed everyone with her ability to cope and face it all with a smile and touch people with her laugh. She was determined to live to be a ‘nanny’ for her grandchildren, and was fortunate to have them close by to see them grow and be part of their daily lives. She was their biggest cheerleader. Gerene was a ‘hero’ to everyone who knew her.

Gerene is survived by her spouse, Leonard Gaines; sons, William “Bill” (Susan) and Michael Gaines (Kelly); grandchildren, Sarah, Kate, Rori and Reese; brother, Steven Greene (Janice), as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Gerene was predeceased by her brothers, Douglas and Randy Greene.

The family wishes to thank all the staff throughout the years at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, especially those in the Oncology Unit. Your kindness and care will never be forgotten.

In keeping with Gerene’s wishes, a visitation will be held at McAdam’s Funeral Home on Monday, January 22nd, 2024 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Interment will take place at the Forest Hill Cemetery in the spring.

For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of the donor’s choice.
