Obituary of Donald Albert Roberts

Donald “Don” Albert Roberts passed away peacefully at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on January 20, 2024, with family by his side, after a sudden decline in his physical health and spending the last 2 months in his “hell on earth”. He was born on June 20, 1930.

Don is survived by his “darling” wife, Joan (Sinclair) (Egers) Roberts, along with her children, Don’s step children, Linda Egers, Dawna Egers (Tim), Tom Egers, Brian Egers, Alan Egers, and all of their children. He was Uncle Don to Bob Constable (Bev), Leila Constable (late Bill), and Heather Morgan (late Greg Mander). Great Uncle Don to Steven Constable (Iris) and the late George Constable, as well as a Great Great Uncle to Alex Wood, Skylar Constable and the late Gabrylle Constable. Don is also survived by a special cousin, Patsy Amos (Arnold).

He was predeceased by his mother, Ida Mildred (Darlington) Roberts; father, Charles A. Roberts; sister, Mary Jane Roberts Constable (George); a special aunt, Gertrude Caswell, as well as his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Don lived his entire life in Fredericton, except for a few years spent studying in the USA. He was a proud member of the Christ Church Cathedral (thank you for your visits), as well as the Fredericton Legion Branch #4.

His talents were diverse and many. He was a past President of the Fredericton Community Concert Society, and past President of the York Sudbury Museum, where he presented many talks about the history of Fredericton, along with special presentations of past Christmases in Fredericton. Some of these presentations are available to watch on YouTube. Don had his own CBC Radio program “Musical Memories”. His program continued on CHSR and continues to be aired on Sundays at 9 am on the UNB radio station, 97.9. He was a special friend of Mary Grannon (author of Maggie Muggins) and the Grannon family. Don appreciated and loved his "angel visitor" Averie McCarthy.

Don was a shopper extraordinaire, as well as an avid book and record collector. He loved and acquired many antiques. Don enjoyed traveling to Europe, all over the USA, Hawaii in particular, and many parts of Canada. He was also known by folks of all ages as Uncle Don, and was referred to as that “dapper man about town”.

Don was proud of his working career. He spent many years at McElmans as their Buyer, Paul Burden’s Gift Store as their Buyer, as well as the UNB Bookstore as their Purchasing Agent for supplies.

A gentleman, a kind and gentle soul, who was loved, adored and cherished by many. Don will be missed.

There will be no visitation or service. A burial will be held later in the spring or summer. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Christ Church Cathedral.
