I worked with Eilish in Sydney Public Health and I simply adored her. She was kind, smart and curious. Everything a doctor should be and more. I learned a lot from Dr Cleary about public health, but more than that, I learned about grace and compassion.
I was telling my current co-workers about Eilish and I happened upon her obituary when I was showing her work to my peers.
I’m so sad for you, her family and for us, the community. We all lost a great person and ally in caring and understanding.
Eilish will live on in her work and her strength of convictions.
Sincerely Judy Kelley

I remember Dr. Elise Cleary very well. I used to listen to her and not a lot when I was younger, and she was very strong on protecting the lives and well-being of New Brunswick through legitimate ways. I met her once when I was visiting a friend of mine in King‘s place at the Sole Man shoe repair shop I was sitting there and I recognized the voice and after she had finished talking to the proprietor, I spoke up and said ma’am, may I ask a question she says sure go ahead I said are you doctor Elise Cleary, and she said yes I am. I introduced myself and we had a wonderful chat for a few minutes. We gave each other a big hug and I told her that I appreciate her efforts so very much. I’m so very saddened to hear of her passing, and my sincerest pray thoughts and condolences. Go to her children, and all of her surviving family members and relatives, friends and all who were touched and made better even for a few minutes in her presence.

All of us here at the New Brunswick Anti-Shale Gas Alliance (NBASGA) are heartbroken with the news of the death of Eilish.
As a person, physician and public health official, she affected the lives of all New Brunswickers. Many of us have fond memories of her in all of her capacities.
But, there is no doubt that she will always have an enduring legacy as a hero in our cause. The importance of her work to our success in keeping shale gas out of our province cannot be overstated. Dr. Cleary's competence, intelligence, honesty and integrity provided a solid foundation for our work and message. Her personality of positive attitude, compassion, and empathy made her a pleasure to work with, and easy to befriend.
Our gratitude, and mine personally, is deep and heartfelt, as is the sense of loss. She was beloved as a person and admired for her work - life goals she achieved, and to which we all should aspire. Jim Emberger, Spokesperson

Dr Cleary was a great woman. She was the first Chief Medical Officer in the world to speak publicly about the risks of fracking to human health. She did this at a time when other CMOs cowered in their civil service silos, worrying about their pensions. She gave a very powerful and influential speech in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland way back in early 2013, based on the report that she had produced for the New Brunswick provincial government. That report and her eloquent and insightful presentation to the people of this threatened land helped to galvanise our campaign to stop fracking. Thank Dr Eilish,we salute you. I was around 4 years old and obsessed with Dinosaurs. My Auntie Eilish had returned back from working in Sierra Leona, of course I didn't understand the importance of her humanitarian work but I was ecstatic that she had taken photos of actual dinosaur footprints. I can pinpoint my desire to travel at this moment, I remember asking her to take me to Africa the next time.
A woman of incredibly achievements always pushing the health of her patients and then public she served first. The integrity she displayed in working for the people of the First Nations in Canada despite the great risks she faced is without parallel.
Without her I would not have my amazing cousins James, Luke, Sorcha and Cormac. Each an overachiever like herself. I would not have treasured memories of visiting them in Manitoba where I went on to make lifelong friends.
To say I will miss conversing with her over travel and where to go next is an understatement. Your loss has left a hole in our family, that we must fill with the knowledge that you lived a full life and enriched the lives of so many others. Thank you for inspiring me to live a better life.

I saw Dr. Eilish Cleary around the FYC Yard now and then particularly during the “Working Parties”, launching and hauling out of boats at the beginning and ending of the boating season. I was introduced to her by Paul during one of these occasions. I always recognized her as this down to earth, naturalist, quiet, dependable, hard working companion of Paul. We often exchanged greetings in the yard. I enjoyed hearing from Paul about their adventures and trips every where.
You can’t imagine our shock when my wife and I when we discovered this morning that she was that same person we admired, over years and months, every time we heard here making a stand or expressing an unpopular, but appropriate, opinion on crucial policies on CBC. She was fearless with a great deal of integrity. I feel so bad that I never put one and one together, in time. We missed the opportunity to tell her, in person, how we felt about her, how we admired, and truly respected her. For that we both are really sorry.
May the Lord accept YOU in paradise, bestow his mercy and forgiveness on YOUR soul, and grant Paul and your family patience and acceptance. Until we meet again, may YOU rest in peace, Dr. Cleary.

I worked with Eilish as colleagues on various files in government and admired and liked her greatly. We discovered that our sons, Luke and Forrest, were good friends, and whenever we ran into each other, would have a great tongue wag about our kids and work and our hopes for the future. She is, without a doubt, one of the most amazing and committed public servants I had the pleasure to work with. And she had a wicked sense of humour. We once had a beer and I was telling her how much I loved The Derry Girls. She made me repeat Derry multiple times, laughing harder each time. Then she told me the proper pronunciation, which truthfully, I never did master. Her passing is beyond sad and unfair, but she lives on in her wonderful children, the legacy of the many lives she touched through her work and expertise, and the many friends and colleagues whose lives she bettered by knowing her. This is a tragedy beyond words. Eilish devoted most of her adult life to healing others in body and spirit. She showed immense courage working in Africa at the height of the Ebola virus, despite risks to her own life. She demonstrated another kind of courage when, as NB’s Chief Medical Officer, she spoke publicly about the sober truth behind the govt-approved forestry spray program. When that act of honesty caused her abrupt dismissal, she continued to heal others as a practising physician. All who knew her well loved her integrity, humour, compassion and gumption. We were lucky to have her here in NB for as long as we did. I hope her children and Paul find some solace in what I am sure will be an outpouring of respect and affection for this rare, dear soul.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Elish Cleary. She was someone who fought hard to serve the interests of the public and she will be remembered as a health professional with integrity.

I met Eilish Cleary some time before I accepted a position in New Brunswick to work as a regional medical officer of health. I chose that job over others offered specifically because I knew Eilish as both an excellent public health specialist, but, just as important, a good person with a warm heart and excellent interpersonal skills.
It is with great sadness for me to learn of her death. We have lost a guiding light in the Canadian public health community.

My sincere condolences to Dr Cleary’s partner and family. I worked in Public Health and the confidence and belief in her when she was Chief was so very high. Very bright, priorities right and unafraid to fight for Public Health. You were a light in a challenging role.
