Sincere condolences to the family. I have many fond memories of building and flying RC radio controlled model planes with Carl and many visits to his shop in the basement.

One day in summer 1953 Carl came to see who was making a tiny-engine noise in his countryside Ottawa area neighbourhood, to which my family had just moved, and his curiosity and engagement with this fellow hobbyist was the beginning of a long friendship, and mentorship on his part, he being 2 years my senior and much further advanced into any subject. We rode the school bus together through high school, sharing thoughts and ideas on all things under the sun and spent much time flying combat control-line, free-flight and his gliders. He started motorbiking with a Wizzer motorized bicycle and after some time got a 1000cc Ariel Square Four and with his flair for bravado impressed the less technical bikers in the Ottawa-Hull area with the "supercharger" on the side of the cylinders, that was made from just the bottom of a polished cooking pot – ever the jokester. He branched out into scramblers and also became the Canadian importer of Bultaco Motorcycles and sold me one of my favourite bikes, the 200cc Sherpa N. After his move to Fredericton his home was my destination of several trips, mostly by touring motorcycle. His house was a refuge from the world of conventional consumerism -- a virtual museum, with things like issues of Life magazine from the early 40's lying around like they were current, and grand furniture even older. Technical creativity reigned supreme within that house with its design office and its basement machine shop. In the garage was always his latest Wankel engine creation on a test stand, ready to scream to deafening life and a prop-wash gale at the push of a starter button. These are the little things that I was privy to as a friend but was aware also of his far-reaching and admirable exploits in the world of engineering. I will always remember Carl as a good-humoured and friendly and accomplished creative genius and offer my deepest sympathy to all his loved ones for their loss. Frank Stokes, Ottawa.

It’s the rare engineer who can design and build. Carl was one of them, like Leonardo de Vinci and Alexander Graham Bell. His home should be made into a museum. My wife (former Dean of Engineering at university of Waterloo) and I are amazed at his achievements.

Carl was a pivotal influence in my life. After riding solo on a Triumph 650 by complete accident in Sudbury the summer of 1967 I immediatly switched my interest from English sports cars to motorcycles. When I returned to UNB the next year I heard of this small 'hole in the wall' dealer of BULTACO bikes in Fredericton. I will never forget the day a friend and I travelled to Carl's porch to be introduced to his small stock of bikes on the porch. He grabbed one and bounced it up and down like a madman! "These bikes are super strong, they are almost like masochists!" he stated. I started my research, quit Mechanical Engineering for a year to save money, and the next summer bought "The best small motorcycle in the world", a Bultaco Metralla 250.
The summer of 1969 I took that bike 18000 miles around North America. I was hooked for life and still, ver 50 years later I have 4 motorcycles in my garage. I have visited 27 countries on my motorcycles , and never been without one or more since then.
Thanks Uncle Carl for changing my life! Rest in peace.
Ron in Brisbane, Australia.

Meeting Carl, Jean, and Frank around 2018 was the first and only time I got to meet my first cousins - 4 times removed - I think. Carl sat majestically in his overstuffed chair and showed me a huge box of family genealogy records. We had a comfortable conversation that day in his big house near the river in Fredericton. It was a perfect day in so many ways, opening up a new branch of my family to admire. We've lost a treasure, but may all his close kin keep his memory alive. Loving greetings to you all!

Very sorry to read of Carl's passing. While a youngster Carl helped me with model airplane building, when a teenager Carl kept my Bultaco running and inspired me to this day, 50 years later, to get out and enjoy motorcycling. His innovations in aeronautics laid the groundwork for unmanned aerial vehicles in Canada in the early years. A quiet and modest genius with whom I will miss chatting.

I will always fondly remember my friend Carl beginning with visiting his bike shop during High School days in the sixties. In fact I still own the Kawasaki he sold me in 1970 and a Bultaco he sold to a friend

I was introduced to Carl in 1992 by the late Glen Boyd. Carl taught me to fly RC and spent many times with Carl at his home and at the flying field. He was an exceptional person and an expert builder and flyer. He will be missed. Sincerely Rick Kirkbride (FMAC)

My condolences to Carl's family and good friends. As a young man attending Albert Street school I would often see, in winter, Carl on one of his Bultaco's with studded tires ripping up Albert Street..... probably coming from the UNB campus. A few years later I would hang out a bit with a friend who purchased a Bultaco from him and Carl was amused that I covered up my Honda gas tank emblems with Bultaco stickers. He was a brilliant engineer.

Hi Carl’s family. Carl and I had many times in his living room getting fuel for the clubs members, during that time we would discuss the Avro Arrow , and the effect of turbulators on an aircraft wing. Great times.
Best Regards Jim Lloyd, Saint John Model Flying Club
