Obituary of John Victor Stewart

The family of John Victor Stewart wishes to announce his death on Sunday, December 20, 2020 at Orchard View Long Term Care Home in the Village of Gagetown, New Brunswick. Vic was born in Fort Frances, Ontario on August 17, 1931. He was the only child of Isabelle Baird Stewart (nee Moffat) of Toronto, and John Victor Stewart, of Chicoutimi, Quebec. Vic grew up in Toronto but left Ontario for New Brunswick to attend the University of New Brunswick where he graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Forestry. While he was there, he was on the swim team and his specialty was the butterfly stroke. He was a longtime supporter of the university throughout his life. He later obtained his Master’s degree in Forest Economics at the University of Toronto. He was a pilot and a member of both COPA (Canadian Owners and Pilots Association) and the Canadian Institute of Forestry. Vic worked for the federal government in Ottawa for most of his career. In 1983 he was transferred to Fredericton, New Brunswick where he worked at the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Complex. Upon his retirement in 1989, Vic and his wife, Pat, purchased the Steamer’s Stop Inn, in the Village of Gagetown. Vic and Pat ran this very successful and popular business for 15 years. Vic is survived by his wife, New Brunswick native Patricia (nee Millar), whom he married in 1961 at Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton. Also survived by his four children, Carolyn (Robert), Ian, Alexandra (Robert) and Andrew (Robert) along with his granddaughter, Isabel Francis. He is also survived by extended family in Bangor, Maine and Toronto, Ontario. No service is planned but a celebration of life will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Class of 1955 Forestry Alumni Scholarship at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton.
