Obituary of Hemlata (Hema) Valsangkar
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Hemlata (Hema) Valsangkar announce her death at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at the age of 79. Born in Akkalkot, India, on June 2, 1944, she was the wife of Dr. Arun Valsangkar of Fredericton.
In addition to her husband of 58 years, Arun, Hemlata leaves behind her children, A. Neil Valsangkar (Heather) and Dr. Monica Valsangkar-Smyth (Jeff); grandchildren, Nathan (Pauline), Nicholas and Samir Valsangkar and Priya, Rohan and Leela Smyth; brothers, Jayant and Vijay (Lalitha) Deshpande; sister Rohini Katkar, many nieces, nephews and extended family members. Hemlata was predeceased by her parents, Govindrao and Maltibai (Godubai) Deshpande and 6 siblings.
Hema earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and Political Science and continued her education by earning a certificate in pottery at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Afterwards, as a juried member of the New Brunswick Craft Council, she established Beechwood Pottery where she enjoyed meeting fellow artisans and friends at craft shows across the province. Many homes have a ‘Hema’ original vase or beautiful porcelain jewellery. Hema was very active in the Fredericton community as a member of the UNB Faculty Women’s Club, the Indo-Canadian Association and Stepping Stone Senior Centre. She also loved traveling, whether it be to exotic conference destinations, cruising or visiting her family.
And above all, Hema was devoted to her family. Some of her favourite memories were of Wednesday afternoons with her ‘boys’ and making her famous peda sweets with all of her grandchildren. She was never happier than when everyone was together. Hema’s kindness, generosity and elegance will forever be missed.
Visitation will be held at McAdam’s Funeral Home on Monday, May 13, 2024 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. For those who wish, donations in Hemlata’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick.
