Obituary of Eivind Thoralf Sorensen
Eivind Thoralf Sorensen, born August 15, 1931, in Oslo, Norway, passed away in hospital in Fredericton, New Brunswick, on July 7, 2024.
Eivind was one of nine children born to Thora Jorgensen and Eivind Sorensen of Nesodden, Norway.
A graduate of Kristelig Gymnasium in Oslo, he came to Canada for future education possibilities. He completed a degree in Economics from the University of Toronto and pursued a career in banking, with the Toronto Dominion Bank, now TD Canada Trust. He held a number of managerial positions in Toronto and Oakville. While in Oakville, he was Treasurer of the area’s United Way campaign.
The expansion of the bank into the Maritimes brought Eivind to Fredericton, as Manager of the Queen Street branch, TD’s largest New Brunswick office at the time. His duties took him around the province and to stints in Halifax. From 1978 to 1979, he was Fredericton Regional Council Chairman, Eastern Region, for The Institute of Canadian Bankers.
Eivind was a voracious reader, a frequent and familiar patron of local libraries, including the facilities at the University of New Brunswick. He was an accomplished amateur scholar of European history.
On his farm property in Harvey Station, he initially grew raspberries, but preferred growing currants; red, white and black varieties. At one time, he had one of the largest currant crops in the province. Tourist establishments in St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, were happy to take advantage of his currant crop for their scones, popular for daily afternoon tea.
Eivind is predeceased by Arnfinn, Gunnar, Gerd, Ruth, Magna, and Grethe. Two brothers, in Norway, Erik and Fridtjof, survive him, along with a host of nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind wife, Nancy, of Burlington, Ontario, son Sven-Erik, of Oshawa and daughter, Karen Ilona, of Ottawa, and three granddaughters, Krystina, Kataryna, and Cora.
Eivind's collection of books are to be donated to the Harvey Community Library.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the care and consideration Eivind received from the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital staff in his final days.
Eivind will be interred at the Harvey Settlement Cemetery on Thursday, July 18 at 2pm, in a private family ceremony.
