Obituary of Elizabeth Ann DeMerchant
It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Elizabeth Ann "Liz" DeMerchant announce her passing on January 23, 2021, at Hospice House, Fredericton.
Liz was born at Wards Creek, near Sussex, NB on April 2, 1940. She moved to Fredericton after graduating from Sussex High School to attend Teacher's College. It was there that she began her teaching career, and met the love of her life, Donald.
Liz was predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Eva Friars, and her brother Ernest. In addition to her husband Don, she is survived by her sons Bill (Betsy), Paul (June), Peter (Sandra), her grandchildren Theresa (Kevin Fraser)Taylor-Fraser, Brian DeMerchant, Katelyn (William) MacMackin, Laura (Samuel) Renault, Robert (Marissa DiCarlo) DeMerchant, Bailey DeMerchant, and her great-grandchildren, Anya Taylor, William Fraser, and Eliza MacMackin.
After a brief teaching career, Liz settled into a life as a wife, mother, and homemaker, first in Fredericton, then in Perth-Andover, and finally, back in Fredericton. Ever the socialite, Liz enjoyed the fellowship of many friends and bridge partners. Be it in Fredericton or at their winter home in Florida, she was always the ultimate hostess.
Throughout their 59 years of marriage, Liz's primary focus was in supporting her husband and family in their success. Through all of life's challenges, she always kept her keen sense of humour. We will all miss her dearly.
Liz was a lifelong member of the Anglican Church of Canada. The family would like to thank Rev. Wandlyn Snelgrove for her prayers and support during this difficult time. The family also extends a special thank you for the kindness and compassionate care given by the staff of DECH and Hospice House.
Due to current Covid-19 restrictions, there will be no visitation or service at this time. Friends are invited to make a donation to Hospice House in Fredericton, the Alzheimer Society of NB, The Canadian Cancer Society, or to a charity of their choice.
