Obituary of John Norman Young
John Young passed away at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on September 6th, 2024, after a sudden illness. He is survived by his loving wife of thirty-one years, Gloria Guitard; his sisters, Donna and Bettie Young; nephews, Adam Young and Graeme Beyeler, as well as Gloria’s brothers and sisters, who embraced him as family. He cherished the many nieces and nephews of Gloria’s kin. John was predeceased by his parents Jean (nee Ferris) and Norman Young, and his sister Nancy Beyeler.
John grew up in the city of Fredericton, where he attended Connaught Primary School, Albert Street School and Fredericton High School. He graduated with a BA from St. Thomas University. John worked for the Department of Natural Resources for many years. After retirement, he and Gloria spent their winters in Fredericton and summers at their cottage on Grand Lake.
Many will remember John’s love for his classical guitar. His love of music fueled other creative projects. In recent years, John became a member of the New Brunswick Film Co-op. His first film, Water into Wine, won the Jane Le Blanc Filmmaker Award of 2020. Saudade followed soon after and two other films are presently in production. The short films are a testament to his passions and perseverance. John lived life fully.
John could be prickly, ornery, and was known for his hilarious self-deprecating wit. He was also deeply compassionate and caring. His wife, family and friends will miss him like crazy.
