Obituary of Josephine "Joey" Julia Neill

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Josephine “Joey” Julia Neill at the age of 90 on September 27, 2024 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Joey passed away surrounded by family, just two months after the loss of her beloved son, Kim. Born on March 31, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Ada (Hazlett) and Leonard Coates.

Joey is survived by her loving husband, Robert “Bob”; daughter, Kathy; daughter-in-law, Annette Paul; grandchildren, Nicholas (Courtney) and Kailey; great-grandchildren, Robert, Alice and Annie; special nieces, Debbie Shanks and Marilyn Keeling, and many extended family members and friends who will forever hold her in their hearts.

Joey and Bob celebrated their milestone 70th anniversary on June 25th, 2024, marking a lifetime of love, partnership, and unwavering devotion to one another. They built a loving family and a life filled with laughter, resilience, and shared memories.

Joey's kind heart and gentle spirit left an indelible mark on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was a constant source of support and wisdom for her family and friends, always putting them first and offering her unconditional love.

Joey's home and cottage at Grand Lake were always welcoming places where laughter and stories were shared. She found joy in the simple things— reading a good book, lunch with the girls, a day of shopping, a round of golf with good friends, skiing, and enjoying a glass of her favourite Pinot Grigio.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She cherished her great-grandchildren who always gave her great joy and a smile on her face whenever they were around.

Special acknowledgement goes out to the importance in Joey and Bob's lives of their closest friends known simply as “the gang”.... Leitha and Jack Dean, Carolyn and Grant Watson, Al and Ernie Douglas, Maude and Bill McNamara, Shirley and Lyle Smith, Ken and Florence Bartlett, and Bill and Mary Young.

Her family finds comfort in knowing that Joey is now with her son, Kim, whose memory she carried with her every day. Together, they are watching over the family, providing them with the same love and guidance they did in life.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses, doctors and staff of 3 East and the Palliative Care Unit at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital for their kindness and compassion during this difficult time.

A private service will be held for family and close friends, where Joey’s life will be celebrated and her memory cherished. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Joey's name to The Chalmers Foundation.

May her gentle soul rest in peace.
