I’ll never forget when I graduated from St Thomas University and I was fortunate enough to be valedictorian in 1993. As luck would have it STU decided to give Stomping Tom Connors an honorary degree that year.
I knew that Mrs O’Connor LOVED Stomping Tom so I made sure to mention her to him early that morning during rehearsal so he was glad to arrange a special surprise for her.
I knew she’d be coming to see me graduate because she’s been a great friend and neighbour my entire life so I brought her around to the private entrance afterwards and I’ll never forget the expression on her face when she saw him. Tom took her by the hand and planted a huge kiss on her cheek. Mrs O’Connor was thrilled!! Afterwards she circled her cheek with her lipstick and told everyone that she wasn’t going to wash her face for a week at least…
I teased her so much saying I knew the “real reason” she attended STU’s convocation wasn’t to hear my address or to see me graduate with my first degree but that she only wanted to be there to see Stomping Tom from PEI.
I grew up with her across the street and she cared so much for my Mom, Dad and my brothers. I am going to miss her but I can smile just thinking of her dancing a jig with Stomping Tom in Heaven now

Helen was the best neighbour that we could ever wish to have. Besides having the most beautiful gardens, she loved the kids and always made a point of asking how they were doing in school. She will be missed. Much love to her family and friends.

Dear Family,
My deepest sympathy to you all as you mourn the passing of your dear mother and grandmother. I have very fond memories of working with Helen, especially at funeral receptions, as we were both members of the CWL at St. Dunstan's. She was such a lovely person, so very friendly and a pleasure to be with. Her smile would light up a room! I always remember that she insisted that we not take the crusts off the sandwiches because it was wasteful. May you find peace in the days ahead as you share beautiful memories. Sincerely, Diane Flynn
