Julia and I met while preparing a presentation on Seed Libraries in Halifax at a library conference. She struck me then as someone who was completely dedicated and passionate about libraries. We met again when she allowed me to shadow her for a day and answer all my pesky questions some years later, still as passionate as ever. I will always remember her as someone who was dynamic and friendly. I offer my deepest condolences to her family and to her immediate co-workers.

I had the great pleasure of working with and getting to know Julia in my role as Chair of MS Canada’s National Government Relations Committee and, more recently, Chair of the MS Canada board of directors. Julia was the spark in the room, quick with a ready smile and a warm hug. Her energy and enthusiasm were constant, and she made many thoughtful contributions to issues under discussion. I have particularly fond memories of meeting with MPs, Ministers, and Senators in Ottawa with Julia on behalf of MS Canada, and Julia so eloquently “telling her story” and advocating for the government to do more to better the lives of all Canadians affected by MS. She unselfishly – and with a bright smile - had impact and made a difference. She will be sadly missed by the directors of MS Canada and others at MS Canada with whom she worked.

There aren't enough words to capture the essence of her smart and caring nature and beautiful spirit. She was truly a beacon of kindness and compassion, and gave so freely of her time and energy. Our shared passion for making a difference in lives of people affected by MS is what brought us together, but its our friendship that we will cherish forever. She made a profound impact in our lives and on our hearts.

Dear Julia,
I am so saddened to hear that the world has lost you. We were never close friends, but we attended Wolfville Junior High and Horton High School together. As others have noted, you were always full of fun and kind to all. I think I know you best from all those seemingly never ending bus rides that we took together to and from our homes on the Ridge. Although your life has been far too short, it is easy to see that you have left a very positive mark and have brighted the days of countless other people. To any of our former classmates and your close friends from that time who may see this message, I am so sorry for your loss.

Julia Stewart: Hilarious, smart, fearless, compassionate leader. I so wish we had more time together. We met at the library, where she opened the doors to a successful community arts project led by Lisa Ann Ross and River Stone Recovery Centre telling the stories of River Stone participants. We recruited her to the River Stone board where she was the knowledge keeper of good governance, good sense and healthy outrage. My daughter, who loves books, was fortunate to work at the library over two summers and experienced Julia's big heart and big smarts every morning at circle. She learned from the best. To Julia's large extended family through Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Switzerland and elsewhere - we share your heartbreak. Her impact on this community is big and beautiful and lasting.

Like all who had the pleasure of knowing Julia, her friends at the Department of Information Science want to extend our profound sorrow, and to join others in celebrating her life. Julia was an excellent student, who showed such strength and perseverance, as she completed her degree while managing her health issues. She was full of energy, ideas, and always so passionate. Since her graduation I had the pleasure of meeting her at conferences, and keeping up with her life virtually through Facebook. She was a significant force for public librarianship, and brought joy to all she worked with. I always appreciated our conversations, and the insights she would bring from her experiences. She was passionate and caring about all the library patrons. I will miss her presence, her big voice and boisterous laughter. I was taken aback when I heard of Julia’s passing. No longer in Fredericton, I wish I was there to share with the community. What I can share is through writing- there are only fond memories beginning with, it’s due to her I became a board member alongside an amazing group of people, why I took up the cello through the lending library, why Saturdays became the norm for Liam and I to visit the children’s section and spend hours - the library became community with Julia’s leadership and staff. There are so many other fond memories that come to mind - seeing her door open and my popping in and we would just talk. I send along my deepest condolences and a virtual hug to her family, friends and the library family

Our family has had the immense pleasure to know Julia through our friends Kate, Gavin and Josephine. From the moment we met Julia, she opened her arms to us. Warm and kind, hilarious, always ready for fun, so spirited with the perfect dose of mischievous. We were always thrilled to be in her company. In the past few years, I also had the chance to work with her professionally at the Public Library. I loved that I could pop into the library and find her door always open. I'd come in uninvited and pitch some hair-brained scheme. She was always game. Always excited. So ready to make things happen. The perfect person to lead such an important public institution. With the help of her amazing staff, she made the library one of my favourite places to work and play. My heart is missing her, but I'm left with so many amazing memories and emotions. Thanks Julia for all that you shared with us.

Julia and I initially met during the Shivering Songs Festival while we were planning/putting on the festival. She was so excited to be hosting shows at the library during the festival and I loved her energy even if our interaction then was only brief.
We began to work together again when I began working with United Way. One of my first events to attend w United Way was a mixer type event and she immediately noticed I was by myself and took me around the room with her to introduce me to everyone, that's just the type of person she was. Always inclusive and always thinking of the bigger picture especially when it came to community and how we could best support our fellow community members. Her smile and spunkiness will be deeply missed by many. Thinking of all those we knew her.

I worked for Julia for an internship in 2015, when I was pretty fresh out of university and new to the working world. The things I witnessed and learned from Julia during those months, I have taken so many of them with me through the intervening years at work and in my personal life. She was one of the most compassionate people I have ever met. She led the morning meetings at the library with so much joy and empathy, both for her coworkers but also for the people who came to the library every day. She was the first person to teach me that librarians are also social workers, teachers, therapists, and so much more. She was always creating new ways for the library to help more people. She created a tool library and a musical instrument library. She organized movie nights and grief groups and language exchanges and foster care and adoption information sessions. She somehow managed to get a commercial-size fridge donated to the library and then got other groups to donate food and water that people could access for free. She had a little free library outside her house in Fredericton. Julia personified social justice in a way that I have never seen anyone else do. She lived it every single day, and did it with so much joy. I looked up to her and the way she went through the world, quietly helping people wherever she went.
I received a job offer before my internship ended, and she told me to take it. This job led to jobs in the NB provincial government, which led to my current job in the Senate. She was kind and generous and I owe her so much for helping me, a kid from rural NB who only worked for her for a short time. I was lucky enough to become her friend and visit her at the library when I came home to NB during holidays. And she was able to come visit me at the Senate, advocating for better MS funding and research. When she would come to Ottawa, she would bring me bags of chicken bones because she knew I was homesick and wanted me to have a little taste of New Brunswick. She didn’t need to do that. It’s just who she was.
I was lucky to know Julia and I will carry her with me forever. My deepest condolences.

She was hired when the store opened in the mall in 1988 I think.
I believe she was going to Acadia at the time and working at the store part time.
I didn’t know her well but, I remember her perpetual infectious smile …
…and with it, the most “unique” and genuine laugh.
My gosh she loved to laugh.
