Obituary of L.W. Gerald Conroy
L.W. Gerald Conroy
1935 – December 17, 2024
The passing of the L.W. Gerald Conroy, husband of the late Alice Andrea Conroy (Hebb), at the age of 89, occurred at Pine Grove Nursing Home Fredericton NB, on December 17, 2024. He was born to Lawrence W. and Edith Abigail Conroy, in Montreal, Quebec. He was the oldest of three.
Gerry was a graduate of McGill University earning his BComm, and then completing his CA. He worked at Macdonald Currie, Westmount Life, and Monsieur Moustache before moving us to New Brunswick where he had accepted a position with the Province of New Brunswick as Director of Treasury and Debt and Management.
Gerry played competitive hockey, starting junior underage. It was there, in his first year that he took a face off against the late, great Jean Belliveau who was in his final year of junior. Lets just say that face off didn’t go well for Dad. Dad was drafted by the Canadians, but his practical father told him to go to school to earn enough money to look after a family.
In his spare time, Gerry was always on the golf course, and when you couldn’t find him there he was supporting his grand children in their endeavors, in the stands at Royals Field or at the Aitken Center. He spent many years helping Michael and Randy at the shop.
Gerry is survived by his children he loved so dearly, Bernie (Paula), Edith (Ross), Mary (late Ingrid), Elizabeth (Michael), Andrea (Dan), his grandchildren- Ryan (Jessica), Jordan, Matthew (Emily), Laura, Stephen (Caitlyn), Lauren (Trevor), Gillian, John (Morgan), Alice and great grand children Serenity, Autumn, Violet and Penelope.
In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his brother Kevin and his family, Pauline Desjardins, brothers in law Peter and his family, Fred and his family, sisters in law Helen and her family, Elizabeth, and Charlene and her family.
Besides the loss of his parents and much loved wife Alice, he was predeceased by sister Wilma (Peter Dufour) and their son Peter, brothers in law Hugh, George, Lemuel, Glen, Carmen, his cousin Lorraine and his special Aunts who looked after him after the death of his mother.
Dementia is a cruel disease. Be patient, be kind, be understanding, be present. Don’t stop visiting. They need you more than ever.
A Celebration of Life will be held on January 3, 2025 from 2-4pm at McAdams Funeral Home, 160 York Street Fredericton. A private internment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, Canadian Cancer Society or the Pine Grove Nursing Home Recreation Department.
