Obituary of Robert Melbourne Giles

Robert (Bob) Melbourne Giles of Fredericton passed away on July 19, 2021. He was 85 years of age. Bob is survived by his wife, Catherine (Dawkins), and his three children, Peter, Rebekah (London Ontario) and Caroline (Fredericton). He also leaves six grandchildren, Matthew, Benjamin, Emma, Nicholas, Olivia, and Samuel. He had a significant presence in their lives. He was also affectionally referred to as "Gramp" by many of their friends, who enjoyed spending time at his home. He was predeceased by his father Ernest and mother, Laura (Grant); his dear sister, Marjorie Tibert; and a son-in-law, Brian McLaughlin. Bob grew up in Devon and spent many years after that living in the Fredericton area. After he retired the family moved to Rusagonis, where he enjoyed country living for the past 40 years. He was self- employed for the majority of his working career, operating several businesses within the city. Prior to Bob going out on his own, he was employed with Provincial Motors where he excelled in sales and customer service. In recognition, he was awarded many complimentary trips which allowed him and Catherine to enjoy travelling to Europe, South America, and Hawaii. Bob contributed to the community by being one of the founding members of the Naskwaaksis Kinsmen, a member of the Fredericton Curling Club, and a member of the Devon Baptist Church. Bob valued the many friends he had over the years. More recently, he became good friends with Ray Davidson who he greatly appreciated for his thoughtfulness and the good company he provided. Bob was often known to speak his mind freely, much to the enjoyment of his grandchildren, and to the benefit of those who needed a champion. There will be a celebration of Bob’s life at a later time. A private family interment will take place at the Forest Hill cemetery The family would like to thank the many people who had been involved in his care, and to all the others that helped out over the past several years as his health declined.
