Obituary of Sharon Ann Weaver

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sharon Ann Weaver on August 14, 2021 at Hospice House after a short and intense battle against cancer. Born on May 19, 1950, in Saint John, NB, she was the daughter of the late Ron and Helen (Hayes) Weaver. Sharon lived life to the fullest through her adventures, passions and sheer determination. She was passionate about social justice, environmentalism, women's rights, local politics, and health. She kept herself fit with white water canoeing, road biking, long distance running, cross country skiing, and hiking -- indeed, she enjoyed most outdoor activity, especially if it involved the woods. Her busy life included earning her PhD in history, while in her 60's. She was an enthusiastic consumer of (all-natural) peanut butter, dates, craft beer, and coffee. Words commonly used to describe Sharon include big-hearted, warm, and goofy, but don't let those words fool you, because she was also described as fierce, and as "feisty as can be". Sharon expressed her passion for making the world a better place through volunteer work, including with the Syrian community in Fredericton and Meals-on-wheels, and through generous donations from her modest income to Environmental Defence, Greenpeace Canada, Nature Conservancy Canada, Canadian Wildlife Federation, Green Party, Amnesty International, Fredericton Food Bank, UNHCR, Canadian Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, and the NB Association of Fire Chiefs (among others!). For the past 20 years, Sharon rented rooms in her house to international female students studying at UNB and St. Thomas, many of whom came to consider Sharon as their Canadian Mom. She supported them, helped them connect with the local community, often cooked for them, and considered herself honoured to have the opportunity to meet them and learn from them. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and especially by her daughters Kimberly Bittermann, Fredericton; Kris Bittermann (Lela Krebs) and their son Kai, Gatineau; brothers James and Michael Weaver; brother-in-law Fred Coleman; as well as a nephew and several nieces; and her cat Tofu. In addition to her parents, Sharon was predeceased by her sister Pat Weaver. A gathering to celebrate Sharon's life will be held on August 28th at McAdam's Funeral Home from 3 - 5 pm. For those who wish, memorial donations in Sharon's memory may be made to Environmental Defence, the Fredericton Foodbank, or Hospice House.
