Obituary of Lorne James Butler

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Lorne James Butler at Hospice Fredericton in his 81st year on August 18th, 2021. Born on February 11th, 1940, in Bell Island, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late William and Marian Butler (née Stevens) and the beloved husband of 53 years to Anne (née Muggah). Lorne was the proud father to Rob (Angee Singer) of Toronto, Keith (Raelene Russell) of St. John’s, Kim (Pat Feltmate) of Fredericton; devoted Poppy to eight wonderful grandchildren, Morgan, Ireland, Robbie, Sam, Matt, Emily, Annabelle and little Charlie. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother David Butler as well as his in-laws Pearl and Harold Muggah. Lorne attended Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) and then TUNS (now Dalhousie) where he obtained a civil engineering degree followed by a Masters in structural steel. He was a registered P. Eng in all four Atlantic provinces. Lorne received an Honorary Life Award from Engineers NS. He had a diverse career in civil engineering which included teaching at MUN and acting as project manager for various construction projects – one of his favorites being the Hotel Newfoundland (now the Sheraton). He was a mentor to numerous young engineers who greatly respected him. Lorne also had various roles on several construction committees. It is while Lorne was living in Halifax that he met the love of his life – Anne. They had 56 beautiful years together and were married for 53. Their 3 children and 8 grandchildren were the most important thing in his life, and he adored them all. Lorne’s interests included hockey, curling, swimming, tennis, skiing, fishing, gardening, oil painting and, of course, carpentry. All who knew him found him kind, loyal, smart, honest, humble, fun-loving and a joke teller. He treated all people fairly and equally. He was a true gentleman. Even when Lorne lost his vision after moving to Fredericton, he never lost his optimism and joy for life, finding great pleasure in his children, grandchildren and their activities. He also enjoyed his new friendships in Fredericton and the Royal T. A special thank you is extended to his physicians, Dr. Kevin Christie, Dr. Jeff Moore, Dr. Rob Martin and the wonderful physicians and staff at Hospice Fredericton where he spent his last days. A funeral service will take place at McAdam’ Funeral Home (160 York Street, Fredericton) on Thursday, August 26th, 2021 at 2:00pm.
