Obituary of Carol May Sears (nee Colwell)

The passing of Carol May Sears (nee Colwell) occurred on June 22, 2022 at the Oromocto Public Hospital. Carol was born in Moncton, New Brunswick on November 7, 1943. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Michael Corey Sears; son, Jonathan (Thea); grandchild, Ronan; and three brothers: John Colwell (Laura), David Colwell, and Robert Colwell. She also leaves behind many nephews, nieces and cousins, including Georgina Granchelli.

Carol was pre-deceased by her father Donald W. Colwell and her mother Olive Colwell (nee Willet). A graduate of Saint John High School, the New Brunswick Teachers’ College, and the University of New Brunswick – Fredericton (Bachelor of Arts), Carol taught school in Saint John, Oromocto, and Fredericton. After she worked at the N.B. Provincial Archives for a few years, Carol was a library assistant at the New Brunswick Legislative Library. She retired in 1999.

Carol was dedicated to adult literacy as a Laubach Literacy volunteer in Canada and in England. An avid reader and cryptic crossword solver, Carol was also a capable navigator in sports-car rallies with her husband. At ice-dices and at racing events at Debert, Nova Scotia Carol would cheer on drivers or act as a flag marshal.

Among her passions was a life-long love of the Bay of Fundy, where she and her husband rented a cottage for 10 years at New River Beach. A "best day" for Carol would include walking on the beach followed by a feed of clams, scallops, or lobster on the cottage deck.

Carol’s family wishes sincerely to thank doctors, nurses, and staff at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton and the Oromocto Public Hospital. Their excellent care and professionalism have been a great service to Carol and a support to her family.

A celebration of Carol’s life will be held on July 26th, 2022 from 2:00pm-4:00pm at McAdam’s Funeral Home, 160 York Street, Fredericton, NB E3B 3N7. The family encourages attendees to wear masks while in the building. 

In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to the charity of the donor’s choice, to the Alzheimer’s Society of New Brunswick, or to the Canadian Mental Health Association of New Brunswick.
