Obituary of Boyd Arnold Ritchie

It is with great sadness, as well as wonderful memories, that we announce the passing of Boyd Arnold Ritchie. He was born in Moncton on September 19th, 1933, the second son of Clement Winston Ritchie and Lucy May (Robbins) Ritchie. He died after a brief illness at the Dr. Chalmers Hospital (DECH) in Fredericton on June 4th, 2020. Boyd will be mourned by his loving wife, Judy Clendening. Boyd and Judy were together for nearly half a century. Boyd was a born a bon vivant and an avid traveler. He and Judy visited nearly every corner of the Caribbean as well as numerous countries in Europe, Asia and South America. Outgoing and gregarious, with a quick wit and a seductive smile, he made friends around the world, as well as, closer to home. His intelligence, sense of humour and legendary hospitality will be missed by so many. Boyd graduated from Rothesay Collegiate and had a life-long connection with the school, as an active member of the "Old Boys" Association. As a young man, during his first year at UNB, he sailed to England with the University Naval Training Division and landed in Dartmouth, England. He was a successful businessman who owned numerous companies in Fredericton, including, C. W. Ritchie & Sons, Atlantic Kitchen Equipment and Neptune Pool and Patio. He was a member of The Elks Club, The Fredericton Curling Club, an early board member of Theatre New Brunswick and a driving force in the New Brunswick Liberal Party. Besides his wife, he is survived by his brother, Laurence. His elder brother, Bob, predeceased him. He will be dearly missed by his four sons, Michael (Brenda) of Florida, David (Shelley) of Alberta, Carl (Christopher) of New York and Geoffrey of New Brunswick, and his daughter, Anastasia Gould of Ottawa. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Amie, Liam, Kyla, Sean, Samantha, Scott, Ashlyn and Duncan as well as two great-grandchildren, Arwyn and Austin, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and Judy’s family. The family would like to thank the workers at Extramural Hospital as well as Integrity Home Health Services, who came to his home. Their professionalism, caring and good spirits were a balm to all. The family also extends their gratitude to Dr. John Beal, Dr. Ashley McLellan, Dr. Amber Swan and Dr. Bea Sainz and her palliative care team. The professional team of nurses on 4 south west cared for Boyd with great compassion. Because of the Covid 19 pandemic, a memorial service and celebration of Boyd’s rich, full life will be held later. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
