Obituary of Winnifred Frances Field

With sadness, the family of Winnifred (Allan) Field announces her death on Sunday, April 2, 2023.

 

Winnifred “Winnie” is predeceased by her beloved grandmother, Flora (Prince) Allan; mother, Grace (Price ) Allan and father, Robert Geoffrey “Geoff” Allan; her mother-in-law Florence (Davies) Field; and her husband of 42 years, Samuel Edward Field. She is survived by her children: Robert (Wei) of Etobicoke, ON; Patricia of Fredericton, NB; and John (Genevieve) of Saint Lazarre, PQ. Her grandchildren Megan, Samantha, Samuel, Emily and Miriam remained the lights of her life to the very end.

 

The family would like to thank Elisabeth Jefferson for many years of enduring friendship and Saturday evenings out. Newer friend Ruth Hayes also has our gratitude for tea and treats and much support in the last chapter of Mom's life.

 

Mom loved her cat Ebony and the many fortunate felines that came before him. Heard said by more than one: were they to have the opportunity, they would choose to come back as one of Winnie's cats as theirs was an existence of choice.

 

Born in Woodstock, she grew up in Canterbury and summered at her beloved cottage on Skiff Lake for more than 70 years.

 

Winnie was a graduate of Mount Allison University. She worked at UNB, as well as Alcan and the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal before settling in Montreal with Dad. They returned to Fredericton to continue to grow their family. The Beaverbrook Art Gallery docent program and art club; University Women's Club of Canada, the bridge club she started with friend Lynn Ralston; Kidney Foundation of Canada-- all of these (and more) were activities and causes she enjoyed, supported and loaned her many talents to over the years.

 

We would like to thank Dr. Saira Athar and her caring assistant Debby Riley; DECH ER staff, Dr Matthew Kenney as well as the nurses of 3SW and the Palliative Care unit. The support and care Mom received in her final days was appreciated beyond measure. Our health care system is in grave trouble, but people like this should give us all hope.

 

A private graveside service will be organized at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Fredericton SPCA or the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick would be appreciated. And, in lieu of a donation, a simple kindness extended to another would also serve as a fitting tribute.
