Obituary of Joe Hoyt
The family of Joe (born Henry Waldo) Hoyt, 89, of Fredericton, New Brunswick, sadly announces he passed away on August 21st , 2023.
Joe was born and raised a single child in Charlottetown, PEI to the late Agnes Myrna (Chapman) and Waldo Clement Hoyt. His love of “the Island” never waned and he visited often.
Joe met Elizabeth (“Casey”) Jones from Moncton at Acadia University and they married on May 17th , 1958. They lived in Woodstock, ON and Saint John, NB then finally settled in Fredericton in 1966.
Joe received his BSc in Mathematics & Physics from Mount Allison University and a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of New Brunswick in 1959. He worked in ON and NB as a Civil Engineer including with an Irving Oil company, ADI Limited and the NB Department of Justice. He worked on several notable commercial buildings across NB, his last professional project being the Miramichi Court House that opened in 2003.
Joe enjoyed sports throughout his life. He captained the 1955 championship Rugby team that was inducted into the Acadia Sports Hall of Fame. Joe picked up hockey and played as an “Oldtimer” until age 69. He also enjoyed basketball, swimming, tennis and skiing. Bridge was a favourite past-time and he met many wonderful people across the table.
Joe’s community work spanned executive positions with the Kinsmen Club, as well as roles with the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Fredericton Figure Skating Club.
Joe is survived by his son Brad (wife Brit, children Cal and Chloe Hoyt), and daughter Margo (husband Glen, children Colin and Sydney Orsak). He was predeceased by his wife of almost 65 years.
The family thanks the doctors, nurses and staff at the Oromocto Public Hospital for their thoughtful care.
A service will be held on Saturday August 26th at 10:30 am in the J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel followed by an opportunity to share stories. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to a cancer charity of their choice.
