Mr Howland,
With your magic pen…
Won’t you please give me a 10 out of 10.
A classmate wrote this line at the end of a poetry assignment given by Mr. Howland. The classmate received the 10/10 mark. A perfect score, which was not an easy task. I imagine seeing the smile on Mr. Holland’s face as he read the words so appropriately placed at the end of the poem.
Condolences to Ms. Swift and Mr. Howland friends and family.

Mr. Howland was one teacher that seen potential in you. He went above and beyond for his students. I will never forget when we had theatre arts class but we did not have a stage, so he brought one into the classroom so we could have the whole experience. He will be missed but never forgotten. Thanks Mr. Howland for making this girl believe she could make something of herself. Condolences to all your loved ones…RIP.

He was that teacher to me, to so many of us. My condolences to his family and his friends. I’m so thankful to have known him and even more thankful I had the privilege of being his student.

So very sad to hear of Philip’s unexpected passing. He was a regular fixture at the Monday Night Film on campus, always with a book in his hands. It was nice to exchange recommendations. He was an individual with a passion for learning, through books, travel, and languages. It is clear to see that he was an excellent teacher who passed along that passion to his many students over his long career. Thinking of you and Elaine at this difficult time.❤️

My condolences to his family and to Ms Swift. Mr Howland was a great teacher and a wonderful person. I rarely saw him frown. A couple of those may have been my fault though, yet I had the utmost respect for him. He had a unique approach and the only one to pass around pink peppermints and play classical music in class! Utmost respect.

I grew up across the street from Phillip, and his family, on Willow Avenue. Then we sort of reconnected when I went to work at the Rowe Dental Clinic. We always had a great chat when he came in and he was always so pleasant and friendly. I actually saw him at the office recently, and he told me about his illness. I am very sorry for your loss. He was a really nice man.
