I am so sad to hear of the passing of Dorothy. I knew her primarily as a colleague during my time in the UNB adult education program during the years 1989 - 1993. We first met when she was part of the committee that interviewed and hired me as the coordinator of the new, summer-based New Brunswick Community College Educator Program and UNB undergraduate program in Adult Education. In my estimation, she was always astonishingly supportive of the learning of the students with whom she worked. It was a blessing to be her colleague. My sincere condolences to the family.

Dr. Dorothy MacKeracher was undoubtedly regarded as one of the leading ‘second generation’ adult educators in Canada even by the outstanding ‘first generation’ Canadian adult educators like Roby Kidd, Alan Thomas, Don Brundage, Diana Ironside and others. She did valuable research, she was well published, she developed adult education graduate programs, but most of all she taught. She was dedicated to advancing the talents of adult educators in service of the social benefit of all Canadians. I consider it a privilege to have been a student colleague and friend of Dorothy. I watched her make a significant contribution to the adult education program at OISE even while still a doctoral student, and I visited her in Fredericton where her contributions to the quality and value of UNB’s adult education programs and department will endure well into the future. As a colleague and friend, I regard Dorothy’s dedication, generosity and commitment to learners and learning were her most outstanding and hugely valuable gifts. They were life-changing benefits to countless people across several generations. You have earned your peace, dear Dorothy.

I arrived at UNB in 2002 to take up one of Dorothy’s adult education mantles, the coordination of the B.Ed program. Dorothy arrived and stood in my office doorway and scared me to death with her sly humour and very presence! I eventually came to understand who she was as a person and was able to relax. She was always there to lend me a hand and offer guidance to this newcomer, so much appreciated. My sincere condolences to her children, grandchildren, friends and colleagues.

To the family - my condolences. Dorothy has held a huge presence in my life. I have many memories of time with her, but the one that stands out most goes like this.
It was a Friday afternoon. I had just defended my graduate thesis and was on my way to the door. As I walked along I stopped to say thanks to her. Her reaction was:
D. (In her gruff kind of way) Are you going to do a doctorate?
Me: I hadn’t thought about it, but where would I go?
D. YOU can go anywhere!
A very short, but pivotal, conversation in my life! Quite the mentor for me. Left UNB that day and, after exploring UBC, Harvard and UofT, in a very short period was on my way to OISE and the Ed.D. Program.

Dorothy's classroom was a safe and nurturing place. She gave opportunities and support (and sometimes the needed push) to explore ideas and try new presentation techniques. At my lowest point she was understanding and supportive for which I will always be grateful.

Dear MacKeracher family,
I was a colleague of Dorothy’s in the UNB Faculty of Education. My area was second language learning. She and I had many rich discussions around the capabilities of adults to learn a second language. At a certain point, she asked me to develop and teach a course to her students in adult education, a request that I eagerly accepted. Our ongoing conversations remain vivid in my mind.
With condolences,
Sally Rehorick

I have many fond memories of Dorothy. She was an exceptional teacher. I took every MEd course of hers that I could. I’m so glad I was able to have a phone conversation with her recently to let her know what a support she was to me as I navigated many life changes during those years. My condolences to Mary and family.

Dorothy saved my life. She gave me the life raft and oars but made me do my own paddling and stayed beside me right up until I reach the Ph.D. shore. Mentor, hero, friend and consummate knitter, forever in my heart. Condolences to Mary, Gordon, Dave and the grand girls who never really got to see her in action in the classroom. She was a whizbang!
