Obituary of Dr Dorothy Margaret MacKeracher

Dr Dorothy Margaret MacKeracher (nee Greetham), Professor Emerita UNB (1935-2024) died on May 17th, 2024 peacefully surrounded by family and friends.

She led a simple and modest life with kindness and generosity, as was her true nature.

Born and raised in Montreal, Dorothy arrived at the University of New Brunswick in 1990. She carved out a place for adult learning at UNB and created its certificate, graduate and post-graduate programs. Under her guidance, adult education thrived at UNB. She leaves behind a legacy of extraordinary adult educators across Canada and beyond.

Students of Dr. MacKeracher recall her dedication, her facilitative skills, her comfortable classroom. They also remember the encouragement, the patience, the positive feedback.

Outside the university, she was active on boards and committees that reflect her continued concern for lifelong learning.

While serving the faculty of education, Dr. MacKeracher was director of graduate studies for ten years and later became co-ordinator of the faculty's doctoral program. Throughout her career, Dorothy MacKeracher was a friend, a mentor, an inspiration and exceled in all areas of her academic life. Her book Making Sense of Adult Learning was a finalist for the Small Book Press Award of 1997.

She will be remembered variously by her former students; YMCA folks in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Southern Ontario; family, friends and colleagues (UNB, McGill, OISE).

Survived by her children: Mary, David (Mary Angastiniotis), and Gordon, and beloved granddaughters Anastasia and Zoe. We will miss her fearlessness, her quiet calm, her warm-hearted smile, and her mischievous grin.
