Dear Christa, Petra, Tina and family: We were deeply saddened to hear about Michael's passing. It was so nice to see you both every time we came to Fredericton, and we missed Michael greatly on our most recent visit. Michael's warmth, sense of humour, and curiosity made our conversations so lively and memorable. Having known Michael since my (Andy's) childhood, he was really like a family member. We will miss him very much.
I've added a picture from a family visit to the cottage, one of his favorite places.
Our deepest sympathies.
Katerina, Nicholas, Serap and Andy

Dear Christa, Petra, Tina and family,
We were so sad to hear of Mike’s passing - we want to express our heartfelt condolences. We are thinking of you and praying for you as you grieve this tremendous loss of your precious husband/father.
We will remember Mike for his warm, hospitable and generous nature. Even from my childhood memories, I remember Mike as always being friendly, interested in people’s thoughts, a good conversationalist and listener, and having a great sense of humour. My parents were so grateful for Mike reaching out and befriending Makoto when he first arrived at NB Power, and for continued friendship over the years. Mike and your family made us feel welcome as newcomers to Canada, introducing us to people, places and way of life in Fredericton, and drawing us into your circle. We have many fond memories of times with your family - meals together at one of our houses, Christmas celebrations at the Konczes on December 26, even a cross-country skiing outing where we thought something happened to Mike and Makoto because they didn’t come back for hours (as it turned out, only a broken binding).
As you honour and celebrate Mike’s life in the coming days, may you find comfort and strength in the love of your family and the support of your friends. May God give you a peace that passes understanding and may you have tears of joy amidst sorrow in the warm memories of your beloved husband and father.
With deep sympathy,
Hiroko, Yoko & Makoto Sawai

Christa,
As you know I worked with Mike in the engineering group at NB Power for many years. I remember meeting Mike on the first day I started working there in 1973 as he was very friendly and made the first day and many others easier. We went out for our exercise walks on countless days. Mike was very fit and full of energy and I can remember walking along the green by the river when we often would walk right past the runners / joggers which we both found hilarious. Also for years Mike and I would go to the UNB pool and swim laps, often 3 times a week. He was as energetic in the pool and never seemed to get tired. Mike was highly respected as a mechanical engineer. He took on many difficult assignments and was successful in all of them. For the last few years I always enjoyed seeing Mike at our mechanical design group alumni Christmas lunchs and sometimes at the market. My most sincere condolences to you and your family on the loss of a great guy. I will miss Mike.
(I will be away at the time of the memorial service but will catch it on-line.)

To Petra and the rest of the Thanisch family,
So sorry to read of Michael's death. He and I worked with the Kidney foundation as volunteers for many years. And, of course, I worked with you, Petra, as an EA. I enjoyed working with Michael on the KFOC. We tease each other about his being English and my being married to a Scotsman. He was such a good treasurer. During this sad time, know that God will be with you, helping you with getting through this sad occasion. Michael was a fine man. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.
God bless you all,
Shiela Watson White, now living in Ontario

Dear Christa and Family,
It was with sadness that I learned of Michael's passing. For many years we were neighbors on Simcoe Court where we made many wonderful friendships. Your daily walks were often an occasion for uplifting conversations often about your family and travels abroad. Michael was such a gentleman whose presence was always heartwarming. May you find peace in the days ahead as you reflect on many beautiful memories .Know that I am thinking of you all with deepest sympathy. Sincerely, Diane Flynn
