I had the pleasure of meeting Walter when I went daily to the Veterans Unit where my late husband was being cared for, prior to his obtaining a nursing home bed. Ray and I shared a meal table with Walter and thoroughly enjoyed our time with him. He entertained us with the story of how he went off to war as a young man, leaving his new wife, Edith, to live with his parents, and that on his return he asked her what she would like, and she replied, %uFFFDa home of our own.%uFFFD. So he built her their Northumberland Street home. Walter was so proud of that house%uFFFD.Despite his being deaf, we managed to converse with him and appreciated his quick sense of humour. I still think fondly of him and send sincere condolences to all the family.
