Obituary of William James Young
It is with sadness that the family of William James "Bill" Young announces his peaceful passing at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, surrounded by family, on Sunday, March 27, 2022. Bill was born and raised in Fredericton, NB. He was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Clara Young, and by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary Elizabeth Harvey (2018). Mourning family members include his two daughters, Jennifer Chisholm (Dave), Kim Webb (Terry), and son James Young (Karen Robichaud) all of Fredericton; his beloved grandchildren, Amy Thornton (Tim) and Robbie Chisholm (Niki) of Fredericton, Sam Webb (Sarah Mocherniak) of Toronto, Hannah Webb (Jonathan Hunson) of Halifax, Patrick Daley (Désirée) of Fredericton and Thomas Daley (Madeline) of Halifax; great grandchildren, Emily, Abby, Jillian, Jacob, Brady, Benjamin, and Lola, as well as several wonderful nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Bill also has one beloved brother, Gordon (Carol Saunders) and their 4 children Chris, Karen, Graeme and Neil, as well as two sisters-in-law, Ruth Cooper and Joan Harvey.
Bill was a graduate of Fredericton High School where he played on the hockey team and he studied Engineering at the University of New Brunswick. He was a dedicated member of Wilmot United Church for over 70 years. Both family and friends were tremendously important throughout his active life. Bill truly enjoyed supporting his much loved kids throughout their activities, often saying, "do your best, that’s all you can do."
He was very active in his community and held leadership roles at the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce, Fredericton Community Foundation, Board of Directors at the Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton Construction Assoc. and NB PETL Trades Apprenticeship. Bill was a leader in the masonry industry both as a General Manager of several companies and also as a respected consultant for masonry technology. He was an active participant in: Atlantic Masonry Assoc., Canadian Masonry Assoc., International Masonry Institute, UNB Civil Engineering Research Dept., Atlantic Provinces Trowel Trades Assoc., and the Atlantic Province Masonry, Tile, Terrazzo Assoc. Bill was an active member of the Garrison Club and co-founder of the Caines River Business Institute where he was an esteemed member for over 40 years.
Bill received several national awards for his work in the Masonry profession and also the Rotary International Paul Harris Award. His companies Maritime Bricklayers, Masontech, and Maritime Canstone built many of UNB Fredericton’s contemporary red brick buildings and numerous large masonry buildings throughout New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI. The companies also restored the majority of Atlantic Canada’s premiere historic stone buildings.
Bill and Mary enjoyed spending time with friends at backyard barbeques, golfing, Harvey Family Reunions on Grand Manan, and vacationing on Anna Maria Island in Florida with their lifelong friends. Forever embracing (and embraced by) his Fredericton community, Bill remained a devoted fan and supporter of the UNB’s Varsity Hockey Program, stayed true to his Saturday visits to the Boyce Farmers Market, and made routine trips for coffee to the Ultramar on Dundonald St., where he would happily chat-up staff and take-in all the hospitality and friendliness offered to him. Cheerfully, a maple syrup candy never passed him by, adding to his already sweet and loving soul; a steadfast New Brunswick builder who will be greatly missed.
